MARBLE

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, mostly dolomite and calcite. Marble is a form of limestone. The veining seen in marble results from mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides and chert. Pure white marble comes from very pure limestone or dolomite protolith that has not come into contact with mineral impurities. Marble has been used for thousands of years as building materials and sculptures and has now found its way to residential homes. Marble is very susceptible to scratching and staining even after it has been sealed. This material is not recommended for kitchens although it is commonly used. If you are interested in using marble for you kitchen, be aware that it will scratch, and can etch or stain. Because of this, bathrooms vanities, shower walls, and floors are excellent applications for marble.
